One of the
most common conditions I see is Otitis Media
with Effusion (Glue Ear) which is infection
in the middle ear. This affects children usually
but also adults and causes pain, hearing loss
and balance problems. |
 |
Other common causes of
hearing loss I see are Noise Induced Hearing
Loss (NIHL) and age associated hearing loss
(presbyacusis), this type of sensorineural loss
can make people prone to developing tinnitus.
|
 |
Hearing aids much like
home entertainment systems have come ahead in
leaps and bounds in rehabilitating hearing loss
over just the last few years. |
 |
I frequently deal with
Otitis Externa which is a bacterial and sometimes
fungal infection of the outer ear. |
 |
Boney narrowing of the
ear canal called exostosis often seen in surfers
can be treated by Exostectomy, a procedure to
widen the narrowed canal. |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
Prominent Ears
are treated by Otoplasty, a cosmetic procedure
to create a natural looking ear. |
 |
Perforated ear drums are
repaired by Myringoplasty and Tympanoplasty
to restore a waterproof ear and improve hearing.
Mastoidectomy is sometimes also required to
stop chronic ear discharge or to treat cholesteatoma. |
 |
Sudden Hearing Loss is
an ENT emergency and needs prompt assessment
and treatment. |

I have a special
interest in the nose and sinuses. Nasal obstruction
is a common complaint with multiple causes such
as allergy, adenoid hypertrophy, nasal polyps,
chronic rhinosinusitis and septal deviation
to name but a few. Appropriate and up to date
medical therapy and sometimes concurrent surgery
can provide dramatic results. |
 |
Adenoidectomy is a common
surgical procedure, I use a newer technique
utilising suction diathermy ablation which is
literally bloodless and in my view safer, controlled
and complete. |
 |
Inferior Turbinoplasty
is another common procedure to relieve nasal
obstruction caused by inferior turbinate hypertrophy
not amenable to medical therapy; this new technique
avoids delay in healing and crusting usually
seen in other techniques. |
 |
Facial Pain, Post Nasal
Drip, Loss of Smell and Facial Congestion are
often associated with disease of the nose and
sinuses. |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
has evolved over the last few years offering
minimally invasive resection of bone and soft
tissue to restore sinus drainage. |
 |
I spent 18 months in Glasgow,
United Kingdom learning advanced techniques
in Nasal surgery and especially Rhinoplasty,
a technique to restore form and function to
the nose. Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery
is offered. |
 |
Treatment of the Bleeding
Nose (epistaxis) is performed in the rooms under
local anaesthetic as is treatment of the Broken
Nose. |

 |
Tonsillar Hypertrophy
causing sleep disordered breathing such as Obstructive
Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is an increasingly common
diagnosis in children nowadays. |
 |
Tonsillectomy for the appropriate
indications in the appropriate patient remains
a safe technique. Pain is minimised with modern
and specialised anaesthesia, careful technique
and good post operative medication. Please contact
us for detailed patient information sheets. |
 |
Voice problems and swallowing
disorders are handled with Endoscopic assessment
and medical and surgical treatment often in
conjunction with a Speech and Language Therapist. |
 |
Snoring is a common but
sometimes destructive phenomenon for the patient
and his or her family or partner. I specialize
in a range of treatments from Injection Snoreplasty
to more radical procedures such as Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty
to deal with snoring. |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
Sleep studies such as overnight
oximetry are recommended for anyone with snoring
and daytime hyper somnolence (excessive sleepiness)
to screen for OSA . These studies
can be provided on site and are covered by your
insurance. |
 |
I continue to offer inexpensive
treatment in the rooms to newborns with tongue
tie (ankyloglossia) that interferes with breastfeeding. |

Otolaryngologists
are trained to deal with all conditions affecting
the head and neck such as benign and malignant
lesions. Cancers originating in the skin, ear,
nose and sinuses, mouth and throat can metastasize
to the local neck nodes. |
 |
Careful history and examination
both direct and Endoscopic and investigation
is essential in the comprehensive treatment
of Head and Neck Cancer. |
 |
The cure rate for early
detected and therefore usually early stage malignancies
is high as opposed to those detected late. |
|
|
|
|
|
| |
 |
A high level of suspicion
by your General Practitioner or health provider
is important for early diagnosis and treatment. |
 |
Persistent Hoarseness,
Pain in the head and neck, Neck Swelling, Swallowing
problems or skin lesions must not be neglected. |
